I hear you. If you’ve never had therapy before, it’s hard to know what it will be like and how it could help. It’s a big leap to commit to something unknown, but if you’re prepared to give it a try, the benefits can be enormous. Here are just some of the things that make therapy a unique experience.

Therapy is a space to explore your thoughts, relationships and feelings confidentially and without judgement.
Therapy is a space to explore your thoughts, relationships and feelings confidentially and without judgement.

1. It’s your session

It sounds obvious, but when you’re working 1:1 with a counsellor, the space and the time is for you. You’re free to bring into the sessions anything you want to discuss without having to allow for space for other people.

2. The space is entirely confidential

Because it’s completely confidential, you don’t need to worry about who else might hear what you want to talk about. For some people it’s a rare opportunity to talk to someone about how they’re feeling and what they’re experiencing without fear of other people finding out.

3. It’s a chance to understand the impact of something on you

The counsellor is there for you. You’re their client. So the focus of the sessions is understanding you and your experience. It isn’t about criticising others, but about truly acknowledging, understanding and validating your experience.

4. There’s no judgement

Your counsellor will be non-judgemental, which is crucial for allowing you to say out loud things that you might not have dared to before. Being honest with yourself about who you are, how you feel and what you want is essential for living a fulfilled life.

5. You’re an active participant in the session

Talking therapy isn’t about something being done to you, rather as the client you’re the one doing the work alongside your therapist. Having the determination to be an active participant in the sessions can be incredibly empowering, which can in turn empower you outside of the counselling room.
